About Dr. Nishino

Dr. Ichizo Nishino is the Director of the Department of Neuromuscular Research at the National Institute of Neuroscience (NIN), National Center of Neurology and Psychiatry (NCNP) in Tokyo, Japan. He earned his M.D. in 1989 and Ph.D. in 1998 from Kyoto University and completed post-doctoral training, including two years at Columbia University. Since 2001, he has led a national referral center for muscle disease, analyzing around 80% of muscle biopsies in Japan. His lab has amassed over 24,000 muscle biopsy samples.

Dr. Nishino is a Visiting/Guest Professor at seven universities across Asia and serves as President of the Asian-Oceanian Myology Center. He is also an Executive Board member of the World Muscle Society and a corresponding Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN) and the American Neurological Association (FANA). His research focuses on understanding the mechanism of muscle diseases, particularly congenital muscle diseases including those caused by RYR1 gene mutations.
