About Dr. Bӧnnemann

Dr. Carsten G. Bönnemann is a pediatric neurologist and internationally recognized expert in neuromuscular disorders and neurogenetics. He currently serves as Chair of the Department of Genomic and Translational Neuroscience at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Prior to joining St. Jude, Dr. Bönnemann was a physician-scientist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where he led the Neuromuscular and Neurogenetic Disorders of Childhood Section.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Bönnemann has made groundbreaking contributions to the understanding and treatment of neuromuscular diseases. His research has led to the identification of a genetic cause of juvenile amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), advanced the understanding of the genetic basis of numerous neuromuscular disorders, and contributed to the first-in-human intrathecal administration of adeno-associated virus (AAV) gene therapy for giant axonal neuropathy.

Dr. Bönnemann’s research focuses on the molecular genetics and cellular biology of muscular dystrophies and early-onset myopathies, with the goal of developing targeted, molecular-based therapies. His work continues to bridge fundamental scientific discovery and translational medicine, improving diagnosis and treatment options for patients worldwide.

In addition to his research and clinical leadership, Dr. Bönnemann serves on the Executive Board of the World Muscle Society and is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Neuromuscular Diseases. He is a former Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences and recipient of the Derek Denny-Brown Neurological Scholar Award from the American Neurological Association.
